My stereo head unit on my boat shuts off when i turn it up ?

I have a boat with a sony head unit. I just bought the boat and it came with the stereo and everything worked great and now if i try to turn it up it just shuts off n then either i have to turn it back on or it does it on its own. What could cause this do i need a new head unit?

Answer:
The stereo might overheat once you boost up the volume. It could be a bad resistor, not regulating the voltage.
