It is the amount of movement foreward and backward within the "main"bearings. There is a "thrust bearing" (generally in the middle main bearing)., - this keeps the crankshaft from "slopping back and forth". Too much travel can be detrimental to operation and life of the engine. It can ruin the timing chain, and casue main bearings to leak, as well as cause troubles in the torque converter and "front seal" in transmission to leak, - on standard transmission cars, it can cause problems with shifting, as it can move back and forth so far that the clutch may not operate properly!
