I have a 98 Grand Am and the steering wheel shakes when I go to above 20 mph. Is it the alignment?
-
When I hold the wheel slightly to right or left it also doesn't shake nearly as much.

Actually you could have a number of problems, that need to be gone thru to make sure what the final trouble is. First have the rims inspected to make sure they are not bent, and check the balance of the tires with an inspection to make sure there are not any slipped belts damage to the tires. Then inspect the brake rotors. A warped rotor can give some vibration, usually most noticable when the brake pedal is lightly pressed. Now the final bit about holding the steering wheel slightly off center could suggest that a tie rod end is bad, so have those inspected as well to make sure. Tie rod failure could put you into a headon collosion, so play it save and have it checked out. Good luck

absolutely nothing to do with alignment. 4-wheel balance will likely take care of it. if not, check for wheel bearing play

Shimmy or vibration is a ROTATIONAL PROBLEM. Alignment has to do with suspension angles and struts, tie rods and control arms don't rotate. Thus, it is not an alignment problem. You either have a bent wheel or more likely, a front tire that is dangerously ply-separated and in need of immediate replacement.

get it checked out, check lugs, if not lugs you are near failure point of a ball joint or tie rod end. either one failing will leave you stranded.

you just need to tighten the bolt on the end of the steering shaft and if that dosent work check the alimement of the fronf axle
