2001 Honda Civic Died While Driving. What's the PROBLEM?
-
Driving to the supermarket in my 2001 Civic EX in Rainy weather, all of a sudden I make a left turn and the engine dies, all electronics( radio, headlights, etc.) are working fine but when trying to start the engine back up it doesn't seem to be sparking. Looking online user say that the 2001 model does not have a distributor like previous models however it has a camshaft position sensor and the coil on plug system is just that, a coil over the spark plug mounted on top of the valve cover. There are 4 coils, one for each cylinder. Is this the right information if so how much do coils run each or if in a pack of 4? or is this not my problem at all??? Thanks in advance

Answer:
Yes, this is correct! This was the fist year for the 1.7L engine (D17A1) (in the Civic) and it has a COP (coil on plug) ignition system. The first thing to check on this vehicle is: 1. See if the immobilizer light in the dash (green picture of a key) comes on for 2 seconds at key on and then goes out, or if it comes on for 2 seconds and then starts flashing. 2. The Check Engine Light SHOULD come ON when the key is first turned ON! NOTE: Another common issue on the 1.7L is a corroded connector for the CKP (crankshaft position sensor) This could explain the stall in the rain. ADDED: Timing belt replacement interveral is 105,000 or 84 Months for 1997 and later!

You didn't say the engine is cranking over ok. Even if it cranks over, it may not start with an old battery. Replace the battery if it's over 4 or 5 years old. You need to do that even if it's not the reason the car won't start and run. The battery cables need to be removed and cleaned with a wire brush and the alternator charging voltage checked as well.

does the engine crank over ? if it does then it could be fuel or spark. no spark from the plugs ? it might be the coil or the module. is gas getting to the engine ? it might be the fuel filter or the pump quit working because of a bad pump relay or the pump fuse blew. i can,t say weather it,s the coil or not because a bad module can go bad too and cause the coil not to work. if your not getting any juice to the plugs then i would check the module first before assuming it,s the coil.

the battery might be dead or you could have a short in the wiring.

If the engine turns over but does not start it is either one of two possible causes. either the timing belt is bad or the electric fuel pump is defective. When was the last time you serviced the timing belt. They should be done at least every 50 -60000 miles. 2001 model year and if you drive 10k per year this means you have roughly 120k miles on the car which maybe a previous owner last replaced that timing belt at 60k miles and now you are due to have the belt replaced too. Replace the water pump at the same time because you need to remove the pump to get to the belt and you may as well put a new one back in too. gl...

If all electronics are fine, I don't think it would be the battery, and anyway, even if the battery had gone bad it wouldn't have just died. If you have actually checked for spark (ie taking out the plug and looking while turning the engine over/some proper tool/ holding a wire or screwdriver from the lead close to an earthing point) and it definitely isn't getting any, I'd replace the distributor cap and/or rotor before doing the coil(s). If you haven't done this, and you do, and it has spark, I'd be liable to say it could be something as simple as the fuel pump, but either way I wouldn't expect it to be too hard to fix. Good luck!
