I have a 97 Dodge Caravan,it recently overheats, how much water to put in radiator?

  • 97 Dodge Caravan, Max level for coolant, used prediluted (50/50) mix.

  • Answer:

fill the radiator all the way.. as much as you can put in it, & fill the plastic overflow tank about half way... there will be a line on the side..

While MOST of the below answers are valid, before throwing money at it, do the simple things first. Are the cooling fans running with the A/C on and does the cooling fan for the radiator come on when it gots hot..Then start with the other suggestions. Good Luck

i find it best to to go 50/50 but i have put more coolant in and it wont hurt but you can check with your manual

radiator should be full. Their is a resevoir tank also that should have a line that says something like "full cold" fill to that, and of course only check and fill the radiator when the engine is cool.

First I would change the thermostat (this is easy to do if you are mechanically inclined at all) Below is the full capacity of a cooling system for a 97 Caravan based on engine sizes. These are complete capacities when filling from empty. 2.4 takes 11.25 qts 3.0 takes 13 qts 3.3 takes 13 1/4 qts 3.8 takes 13 1/4 qts If your vehicle has a separate rear heater control it will require an extra 2 qts of anti freeze to fill the system. Also do not buy pre mixed 50/50 anti freeze! It is a rip off! You save a dollar and only get half a gallon of anti freeze already mixed with half a gallon of water. Anti freeze MUST BE MIXED 50/50 with water, but mixing yourself is more economical.

u should replace the thermostat to stop the overheating.....just fill the rad to the top.

The thermostat is staying closed not allowing circulation. You can fill, and fill, it will still overheat. Replace the thermostat. There are different temp. thermostats available, get the recommendation from the auto store that you buy it from. Fill the radiator with a 50/50 mix.(coolant to water ratio) Fill the overflow after the engine has circulated, then fill to the hot line labeled on the overflow.

with this vehicle you have to watch it when it overheats. you can do engine damage. with that said you can fill the radiator to the top and the the over flow jug to full cold when the vehicle is cold. Now one thing you have to understand is that this vehicle can get air pockets if it is leaking water and will cause on overheating problem. You need to get it looked at.
