Car alarm question, please kindly help?
-
Ok, so my car alarm has been acting funny. The alarm has been installed 8 years ago, so it's out of warranty. Quoted a price at different car alarm installation places but way too expensive just to diagnose it so I have to hold off on that. And I'm really dumb when it comes to cars as I am totally not a car person. So if anyone can give me some clues that would be great. Thought my car alarm was too sensitive but I don't think that's the case because there's nothing around it that would have a reason to trigger the sound of the alarm and at random times about once or twice a day, the car or car alarm would make 3 small honking beeps. I'm not sure what that means. However, it doesn't go off or anything, but just those 3 small honking beeps once or twice a day. The car runs fine and it does lock and everything. The noise is just rather annoying. Is there something wrong with the alarm and is this normal? Should I have anything to worry about? Didn't do that before but just started a few weeks ago. Any clues or solutions would be appreciated, thanks!

Answer:
Personally, I think car alarms are for the most part a waste of time and money. To assure that your car can't be moved just install an ignition or coil cut-out switch in a hidden location. This will protect the car from being stolen by disabling the ignition. Car alarms are so common these days that no one pays much attention anymore when one goes off. I would just have the old alarm removed from your car and go with the ignition lock out switch. Cheaper, less hassle and probably just as effective.

those "three honks" are like the alarm warning. This happens if a minor bump or loud noise goes off. If none of those two things happen then maybe there is something wrong. But other than annoying, ther should be no problem.

Mine used to do that. New ones can do it as well as old. It could be a few things. The most common is the 'brain' of the system may be wearing out. If that's the case, the main portion of the anti-theft device would have to be replaced. It could be wiring, as well. Sometimes wires just go bad, wear out, get shorts in them and other things. The sensors that trigger the warning beeps if the car is thumped (that's what your three honks are) can go bad just from being old, and their slow decay can sometimes disrupt the proper functioning of the alarm. If the system is working okay, you can ride it for a little while as you save up to repair it. One thing to think of is whether or not your alarm has an ignition kill in the package. If the alarm malfunctions, will you be able to start your car? Or is it just there to make noise in case someone is tampering with the vehicle? My car did that for over a year, and it does have an ignition kill integrated, so you might (I stress might) be able to get by for a bit, but definitely start saving up for the worst case scenario.
