Why did carx take a look at my car for 15 minutes for a Check Engine Light?

  • My check engine light is on for my 99' Honda Civic LX. I told the Carx guys my car didn't start the first time in the cold morning, theres a clanging when I accelerate, and that the oil/coolant are fine. I also told them the car didn't accelerate forward when the check engine light came on but reversed just fine. They took it all into consideration said to be back in an hour. I sat across at Starbucks to watch what they did, they pulled the car in, looked at it for 15 minutes, parked it back outside. I walked over, as if, to see what was the issue, if they found it. They eventually, 5 minutes later, said it was the cars computer board that was the issue and it would need to be fixed at a dealership. I asked why the car made a clanging sound when accelerating and he said "The computer board is malfunctioning giving mixed signals to the engine". Is this possible to diagnose in 15 minutes without a diagnostic analysis?

    They don't have the properly trained techs or equipment to handle your problem, knew quickly and decided to ship you down the road because they want the fast easy money making jobs. What they told you doesn't even make sense. Take your car to someone else you can trust.

well it only takes 20 secs to plug your car into a scanner(computer) and 30 secs for the two computers to start talking. if your computer didnt talk to the scanner than your computer is bad....which is not cheap at all.

To plug in a OBD2 code reader, check the codes, and turn the car off takes less than a minute for me. If you said you were going to Starbucks then yah they may have just left it in there for a few while you were over there. I do it all the time at my work. If the customer isn't going to wait I may get the job done and leave it. Especially if it's cold out. Honda dealership is the place to go for your problem though.

my computer will tell me that in 5 muinets he may have taken so long because he was werifying what he was seeing on his computer and if they dont replace computers or wanted the dealer to verify there test i say he is doing good to you by not selling you stuff you may not need

Go hunt someone, ( i went to jiffy lube) ask em where is the dip stick for the transmission-They`ll do it for you. Tell them you`re worried abut your transmission & need to check if it`s low.Honda`s are GREAT cars,but the transmission is common problem in them.Those engine lights come on automatically,( so they can get money to turn them off). However, I defintly wouuld get the transmission fluid checked. Sounds like they don`t know what they`re talking about. Do have it checked before you go to dealership,so they think you have some knowledge about cars.

What probably happened is ... their machine probably gave them an error code that they do not have the translation to. If possible find out what the code is ... and call up honda customer service or your honda dealership with that code and ask them what it means ... you can even do a search for that code using google or yahoo. Once you find out what it means start your corrective action or find some honda geek to fix er up. I'm guessing that your warrenty expired ... the way it sounds you might be running low on transmission fluild or due to for a transmission change. Make sure your timming belt is less than 60K as well.

Possible but a bit dubious. Go ahead and go to the dealership and get another diagnostic run. They will have the most up to date tools for your Honda, and better able to discern the troubles. Certain diagnostics can be very short, and it is possible that Carx got enough info to tell you to go to the dealership. Good luck.

How do you know they DIDN'T do a diagnostic when they clearly had it in the shop for at least 15 minutes (probably more like 20-25 since everyone exagerates this stuff). That is more than enough time to determine a bad PCM.

yup!! they probabaly pluged in a diagnostic tool while you were ordering your latte,so you probably missed it. the extra 13 min. you saw they were just screwing around. 8 hr's in a day dont ya know!
