How to fix a scratch in a car window?

• We recently had a fairly large snowstorm, and my car was covered in snow. I was going about the process of removing the snow, when I decided to use a snow shovel to get larger amounts of snow off the car faster. I got careless, and while using the shovel on the hood of the car, I managed to go too far and lightly scrape the front windshield. I feel like an imbecile, but it isn't that bad of a scratch. I am willing to just tell my dad, but I wouldn't mind trying to fix it myself. For the time being, it isn't in the way of the driver's side, and so shouldn't be a big issue. I did some research online, and ehow.com recommends using baking soda based tooth paste and powdered baking soda on small scratches (http://www.ehow.com/how_4487552_get-rid-scratches-car-window.html). However, the process seems somewhat time consuming. If anyone has any other methods of repairing the scratch WITHOUT purchasing some glass repair kit from a store, I would love a response.   Sorry to tell you but get a glass repair kit. They are only about $15. Over fill the crack with the compound making sure not to have air bubbles. You can drag out air bubbles with a sewing neddle. You have to work fast because it sets up fast. Make sure you can use it when it is cold. It might not bond otherwise. Once it is dry you can scrap the excess off with a razor blade.
