Answer:
Carfax uses over 8000 data sources to get as much information on a vehicle as they can. Though - they will never get everything. Their list of sources is far greater than some of the other answers indicated: Totaled in an accident Salvage/Junk titles Flood damage Odometer readings Lemon histories State emissions inspection results Pass/fail inspection status Damage reports from accidents Major repair and maintenance data Police-reported accident detail Open Recalls City/State of owner Original vehicle use (rental, taxi, lease, etc.) Lien information Maintenance/service data Vehicle registrations Junk Titles Stolen Vehicles Odometer Rollbacks What they don't have is: Names of prior or current owners (that's against the law) Every accident (hey if an accident occurs in the woods and nobody reports it, did an accident really happen). Too many people believe Carfax has ALL accidents - that is just impossible. That's why you also have the mechanic's inspection done. Names of the selling dealers Names of the service stations Names of the inspection companies Insurance information

I know carfax is legit, and worth it if you're buying a used car.

They can't tell you everything, there have been a lot of scams involving flooded cars with fake paperwork.

The information is only as accurate as the information entered into the system. It's hard to tell if everything has been entered about a car. Besides I believe you have to pay for those services. Bottom Line - I guess it can't really hurt.

carfax is only good if the owner brought your car in for servicing at a dealer. If he brought that used car to a local garage, then the info is not inputted into carfax at all. All of the recods recorded by carfax are submitted by dealers. The only time we bring our cars back to the dealer is when it is still under warantee.

Carfax has a guarantee if they are wrong they will pay you. I wish I got a carfax before I bought my car. The guy showed us it was a clean title, but when we registered it it came up as a salvage title. Now we are suing the guy who sold it to us and the state for giving it a clean title when it was actually salvaged

The reports only contain info that has been entered into them - namely recalls, service bulletins, and if the title was ever entered as totalled or salvaged. If I buy a car, beat the piss out of it for five years, and sell it used, or trade it in, there is no vehicle history that will tell you that. I'd recommend you get FREE info from www.nhsta.gov ....they have every recall and service bulliten ever entered for every vehcile on the road.

I would highly recommend doing a car history report. I used carfax. When I was looking for a used truck I had found that it had been in an accident and got them to drop the price down $2300. The reports are very detailed. Another nice thing about carfax is it lets you use the service for 30 days which means you can run as many reoports on it as you like. You don't want to buy a car that was from the south if you live in new england or anywhere else where there is snow. I ran all three of my cars and it was dead on. From the time that I purchased to previous owners. It even gives you details on repairs that have been made. It is a wise investment if you are looking to buy a used car. You are right you don't know what you are getting. This is the best way you are going to find out. The dealer doesn't even know. They just buy these cars at auctions, clean them up real nice and on the lot they go. With a price tag almost doubled what they paid for them. Take your time buying haggle with the price and do not rush. If they don't take your offer right away just leave them your number and tell them to call if they change their mind. They always call back. May take a few weeks but they will call.
