How to rebuild an Air cooled VW motor?

How to rebuild an air cooled vw motor?

  • Answer:

I assume the engine is out of the car. Remove the cooling shroud, the generator drives the fan inside the shroud, the oil cooler can now be seen and removed, they sell better ones that are taller. now remove the valve covers which must remover by sliding the clip off with a screwdriver. now the heads can be removed, then remove the cylinders, if their bad you can get new ones from j.c.Whitney, the pistons can then be removed, i don't remember of they are pressed on or if their is a clip holding the wrist pin, then the connecting rods can be removed you may be able to remove the rod bolts with the pistons in place i don't remember, the the crank case can be taken in half, make sure all bolts are removed and remember where they go as some may be longer than others, if the pistons and cylinders are bad you can get new ones, also they sell over size ones if you want a little bigger engine. once all the parts have been acquired assemble in reverse order, the cylinders come with shims to bring the cylinders up th the correct height for the pistons. it has been a lot of years since high school but they were an easy engine to work on back in "74" i hope i haven't left much out. they may still sell after market performance parts for this engine.
