What are the steps i need to take in fixing up my first car?

  • Im im 16 now and getting a ford ranger (1989 i think?) and its been sitting outside for about 9 years... supprizingly the inside is still clean... but i have no clue what works and what doest and all the steps i need to take to fix it. for instance... what do i need to make sure works, before i check this other thing... step by step like that please. also my grandad has a shop with a lift, tire rotator ect... every thing ill need... so please help (: ty

    i bought a round for the house, they are correct, but easy on the electrics.also it dont hurt to try the fuel tank, i just fired an olds thats beeen parked 20 yrs, it still had fuel in the tank,no rust,although bad fuel.

Congradulations on your new car man, that's a cool feeling isn't it. You need to read the user manual for it first. Check all the fluids next; oil, coolant, ect. Then turn it on and take it for a drive, staying in walking distance of your home, to be sure it works fine.

If it's been sitting for 9 years, I'd start with a battery and oil change. You'll also need to empty the fuel tank and lines, which will probably be rotted and need replaced. Then go through all the electrical and make sure it all works. Lights, radio, etc. Then, see if it starts. If it does, my next step would be the brakes. Pump the pedal and make sure it holds. The tires will probably be shot and dry rotted, so you'll want to replace those as well. This is just a very basic list to start off with. Before you take it out on the road, I'd get your grandpa to look over everything with you. That way he can spot things you may overlook and help you out.
