2001 Chevy Astro AWD?

Should I and how do I replace ignition on 2001 Astro AWD?

  • I bought a 2001 awd Astro Van. Since the very beginning I had ignition trouble, I would put the key in and turn it but it would not turn. I would wiggle the key and or steering wheel a bit till it turned and started the vehicle. Finally earlier today I had the same trouble and this time nothing worked. I tried wiggling the key,the steering wheel, and made sure the gear was in park too. Nothing seemed to help.Don't know if it is the ignition cylinder to be changed or switch?Since the key won't turn, I also need to know if I need to remove the steering wheel to remove the cylinder?

  • Answer:

The ignition cylinder will have to be replaced. It's obvious it was a ignored problem that was waiting to happen. The ignition cylinder has to turn in order for it to be taken out. Therefore, it will have to be drilled in order for it to be turned and removed. The cylinder does have a program that is read by the brain to prevent theft so it will be a bit pricey. It is nothing to big to order from the dealership. It's just a bit more in price then a ordinary ignition cylinder. These ignition cylinders are notorious for wear and tear in GM vehicles. The price in parts and labor should be under $200.00 US dollars. Good luck!
