The "Check Engine" light came on in my '96 Explorer on Christmas Day. Can I wait two weeks to get it checked?

Since your car is still running well it may be related to your oxygen sensor or your catalytic converters. If the code is related to "converter efficiency below threshhold" try this. I stumbled accross this a couple months ago with my Crown Victoria. Two tanks of Shell gasoline apparently cleaned the my exhaust system enough to turn off the light. The light came one again when I started using off brand gas again. One tank of Shell gas (regular) deactivated the light again. No I do not work for Shell. But this may be an easy fix. Who knows Chevron or Exxon may have the same effect. Prior to this episode I bought the cheapest gas (HEB, Kroger, Racetrak).

you can go to any autozone and they will check it for free. to see what it is.but if is still running fine it's not majar and can wait till you get it serviced. only takes about five min to check.

just like above...take it to Autozone or Advanced Auto and they will check it for you so you know whats wrong. atleast that way if its something easy you can do it.

Disconnect the battery for a couple minutes the reconnect the battery if check engine light goes away, the problem was temporary. If comes back on Autozone will do a free check to narrow down the problem

if the check engine light is not blinking you can drive it for awhile with no problem the check engine light stays on steady when a minor problem is detected when a major problem is detected it will blink but of course it does mean something is wrong but it could be something as simple as the gas cap losing pressure like everyone said earlier a autozone or such is a good choice to read codes
