What happens if you put 91 octane fuel in a car that need 98 octane fuel?

    You'd be wasting money. The cars computer will auto adjust for burn air n' fuel mix to optimal. As the performance & compression ratio of the engine goes up so does the need for higher octane. Many racing cars with engines making 600hp or more usually need 100 octane. A typical street car with a turbo does just fine on 91 octane. Normally aspirated cars do good on 87-89 octane. It's best to read your owners manual. It will clearly spell out the best octane to use. Higher octanes prevent pre-detonation or knock.

Not much. The rating is the strength of refining for combustion. You would not be able to tell the difference in performance.

what kind of car needs 98? No production car that's for sure... maybe a race car? if so, don't use 91 or it will destroy the pistons! .. you better get some racing gas or av gas... you can go higher, like 104. but you cannot use a lower octane gasoline than required ..

Well for one thing it's only going to run 91/98ths % of the time.So if your running from the cops after it uses 91 of the 98 octanes it's going to quit mid chase until 7 octanes from the next gallon can filter themselves into the previous gallon. As far as putting 98 in a car that need(s) 91, if the cop is trying to pull you over when you are at the 91 usage point, you wont be able to pull over for 7 octanes,which depending on the model vehicle you drive can vary greatly and really irritate a cop. And on that last one I'm sorry but just not good at math. And to think some people say my cornbread isn't mixed up too good
