Changing your oil at 3,000 Scam or necessity?
-
I think the 3,000 mile "lube it or lose it" is all hype. Seems to me if you use a good quality oil filter (99.9% 1 pass), and decent oil, you should be able to do 7500+ with no adverse impact. Unless your driving in sand storms, I think the 3,000 mile thing is a scam by quick-e-lubes to take your money. Also quick-e-lube places use cheap filters (which to me is way worst than 7500 miles) any thoughts?

How is it a scam for a 20 dollar oil change. The cost of the oil, filter, and to pay the tech is almost twenty dollars so they are making ZIP off of you. If you think it's a scam to make 2 dollars profit for an oil change, you are very incorrect.

If you never change your oil its OK with me,but I am going to change mine every 3000 miles.

I disagree. I have seen people run their cars 8k between oil changes consistently and the engine was done at 150,000 miles. I drive an 84 Suburban with a 6.2 diesel engine, and I RELIGIOUSLY change my oil every 3 months or 3k miles, and I have, as on this evening, 530,000 miles on my engine with only some work done. Try doing that with running 8k on oil changes.

you keep doing it your way,and when your engine locks up,come on back and let us know how much the new one is going to cost you. a sand storm has nothing to do with an oil change, air filter yes, oil,no.Even good oil filters loose the ability to filter properly after 3000 miles, but hey, keep on truckin. And how is it a scam???go to your local parts store, and price good filter and 5 quarts of quality oil, then figure in your labor................. not such a scam now,is it. worst=worse. 20 bucks is a helluva lot cheaper than the gamble of blowing an engine anyday.

Using regular motor oil and changing at 3,000 miles is smart. After several 1,000 miles many of the viscosity modifiers and other additives are worn out or gone. Also the oil has suspended contaminants and fuel in it. It also may have gone acidic and can strip bearings of there smooth surface finish. Mobil One is what I use in all my vehicles and change it out on the vehicles recommended interval or sooner.

For me ill follow the recommended oil change frequency indicated on warranty booklet that is included in the vehicle when you buy it, after all the car manufacturer knows whats best for your car to attain its maximum efficiency.

you can run higher mileage if you run a really good synthetic oil in it other wise conventional oil will break down and cause deposits to start forming which leads to engine problems, and sludge problems, synthetic oil doesn't react to heat like conventional oil does so it holds up a lot better, but it is necessary to change conventional oil at least ever 3-5 thousand miles,i wouldn't run it no more than that,or you could do serious damage to the engine, good luck with it.

I change my own oil every 3k and never let places like Jiffy Lube touch my car.
