How is the battery of a hybrid car charged?

How can I keep my car battery charged?

  • I am getting conflicting information from various gents where I live. Some say to turn everything on, like the radio, heater to make the alternator work to charge the battery and others say to turn nothing on.

  • Answer:

if it is losing charge like that it is buggered , time for a new battery if one of those guys has a multimeter you can check if the alternator is working by checking battery voltage before starting car then when car is running it should have a higher reading running around 14.5 - 14.7volts how old is it ? You are doing good if you get 5 years out of a battery most die around 3 years cold weather can kill batteries hugs xxxx

A good battery will be charged automatically when you take a drive frequently...no extra actions needed...but when your car is standing still for sometime you may need to charge it manually ... Let the battery checked by an engineer to see if it is still in a good state...replace it if needed,,,

if you are not using your car, just let it run for 30 minutes every month

Sounds like you need a new car Ms.Rush. Because my father is suffering with Alzheimer's I now have to sell his car. It's a lovely little Hyundai and he's looked after it meticulously, as all senior citizens do. How about I personally bring it round for you to test drive?

I would keep the gents charged - then you'll always have somebody to fix your car or run to the store and buy a new battery. But basically, if the alternator isn't working, no battery will stay charged very long, and trying to fool the alternator into working isn't the answer.

check your alternator is in working condition or not and if it is working ,change your battery if it is older than 2 years

I don't use the old banger very much these days, but I do take it for a spin once a week, just to keep the battery charged. I do a thirty mile trip with the radio on and dipped headlights. That works for me and old Sal (my motor car). However, if you have any doubts, do take the car to your local garage and let the chaps there check your battery. It could be you are need of a new one. These things do happen.

I think what everybody is failing to ask is WHY isn't it staying charged. Weekend warriors tend to speak their opinions without having the information they need. That is always a red flag of a novice. Is it sitting? Bad cell? Alternator? Draw? High load? This is Auto 101 babe...you need to give more details, email me and I can diagnose it more directly if you would like, I'm bored. I do this for a living, most of these cats sit at desks. :)

To keep your battery charged, always start the car when using your car accessories like radio, etc. What this does is that, it turns the alternator to keep your battery charged. Also if you are going to go on a vacation or a long trip, unplug the negative cable from the battery because even though you don't start the car, it still consumes energy.
