Can I get written up for a medical issue?

RACV written off car, can i buy it back?

  • Due to the weather storms in melbourne we have one of our cars which we believe it will be written off because it's insured for $3500 and the damage will be close to that using PDR. If they do write it off can we buy back the car? What are the rules with writing off a car with RACV, like is it 80% of the value? My issue is that it is not worth having the car repaired but to get it valued i have to drive for 3 hours and if they write it off but we can't buy it back then there is no point because we won't get the same car in the same condition for that price. I just don't want to waste my time. I called RACV and "they can't comment on that".

  • Answer:

I managed to get an answer off RACV regarding buying the car back. I'm not sure if its what you need but I'll share -Once RACV gives you a payout for a write off, the car is theirs and I was led to believe they surrender it - You go through a 'Claims Officer' if you want to buy it back - The buy back amount will be reduced from your payout (along with excess and whatever else) - They buy back price will be around $500, but could be more or less depending on the salvage value which may or may not need to be inspected. - You can only buy the car back if its in a road worthy condition (those are my words because this is when the call consultant begun to get hazy on details and filled his sentances with 'you knows" and "depending on the circumstances" which simply frustrated me). If they think the car is safe to drive and safe to be on the road then theres no reason why you cant buy it back. Hail damage, as in dents and panel damage I would assume would qualify as safe, given its cosmetic damage. Hope this helps. For what its worth, I advise calling RACV posing as a potential customer (I claimed to be disappointed with the service of their competition so he seemed more than happy to oblige). Mention you've had a write off and your looking to buy a new car, and you'd want to know how they handle it in case of future write offs. . .then go nuts with the questions you need answers to!
