Is it normal to pay $188 for 2009 California vehicle registration renewal?

    Haven't you heard? California is broke, and just increased auto registration fees a month or two ago. The legislature (the guy YOU voted into office) is now debating increasing the fees even higher to help pay for California's $23 billion (with a "B") deficit. You should feel lucky, you got off relatively cheap. Just imagine what it would have cost if your car was a 2009 model. Don't forget to vote for "your guy" again so they can tax you some more.

That sounds inexpensive for California to me. I used to live there and vehicle registration was based on car value - the newer and more expensive the car, the higher your rate. The part that's based on value can be written off on your taxes because its considered a personal property tax (part of the License fee). Without knowing about your vehicle and where in California you live, it's hard to say but it doesn't sound outrageous to me. As an example, a 2009 $30,000 car purchased in Orange County would have a total registration/license fee of $434 at purchase. You can go to the CA DMV website for more info.

Sounds crazy cheap to me. I just paid over $350 to renew a registration on a 2008 Impala in Indiana.

Yup! California is bankrupted. This year any registrations after May 1st, were increased! If we stopped giving entitlements and paying for illegals healthcare, and bunch of other Freebees this wouldn't happen. It is absolutely ridiculous anymore! Your lucky you don't own a truck!!
