How to find out if my title was stolen?

Lent my car to sis-in law, wouldnt return, STOLEN CAR?

  • I own an old car which I hardly use due to its radiator problem. When my brother was going through a bad divorce, his wife then needed a car so she can go to work. Out of good faith, my mother gave her my car to use going to work since my brother couldnt provide her one. We planned of giving it to her unfortunately we couldnt find the pink slip, the title of the vehicle. So we just allowed her to use it as long as she wants. When the divorce was finalized, she still had the car and since we knew she would need it, we just let her use it and it;s been almost a year now. We never got to talk with her after that. Recently I received a notice from DMV stating the registration of the car has expired and it should be renewed, I informed the ex-wife of my brother and told her she should give back the car if she has no intention of registering it. She told me that she understood that the car was already given to her. She said the car is in the mechanic for a long time now, and so I told her so why didnt you pay for the registration or the non-operational fee and she claimed that my mother gave her something to prove that car was already given to her. I recently found the title registration of the car from my stuff and told her, I have the title so how can it be hers and in the DMV records, I am still the registered owner. We just lent it to her and she doesnt want to return it and told us that she would just see us in court!! My mother told me that she wrote a note saying that we gave her the car, forging my signature and I told my mother you cannot do that coz I have the title of the car and I am still the registered owner! Can I report this as a STOLEN CAR?? What charges can I make against my sis in law? She wouldnt even pay the registration nor the non-operational fee and wouldnt return the car? How can she sue me if I am the owner? is that even possible??? HELP!

  • Answer:

Of course not, it isn't. You loaned it to her and let her use it. Since you got the notice to register the car, it's obvious it is in your name still. If you want the car back, explain to her it was a loan, and the time is up, and she needs to return it to you. If she won't, take the title and go get it. Call the police if you need to to get your car back. But you can't report it as stolen, it wasn't. You can do a "Failure to return a borrowed car when asked" or "unauthorized use" perhaps.

no you can not report it stolen.. she took it with your permission... i let my boyfriend drive my van to work one day and he decided nto to come back.. 2 days later i called the police and they said its not stolen if he had been given the keys by me..

Definitely report it stolen. If it is floating around out there and gets into an accident (you only have her word that it's in the shop) you, the registered owner, are the person liable unless there is a car theft report on the books.

I would just sign the pink slip and mail it to her. Be done with it. Then you can report the car to the DMV as having a new owner, and that's it. Do you really want to deal with this person anymore then you have to now?

if the registration is expired, take renewal slip to your dmv, tell them that you have salvaged or abandoned the vehicle ..or gave to a mechanic, etc etc and do not wish to renew it. Good Luck

No, the car is not stolen. You gave her the keys. This isn't a criminal matter, it's a civil matter - meaning you have to sue her.

yes

I Have A dream

Ya, you should sue her, to legally show ownership of the car, you must have the title, and in order to change owners, you must tell the DMW. Legally, you are the owner of the car. If she doesn't give you back the car, you have the right to sue her to receive what is rightfully yours. But since she is a family member, give it some time before you take legal action. Tell her you will take legal action if she does not comply, maybe that will scare her into giving you back the car.
