California license question.

This a California driver's license question...?

  • I no longer have a car, so my parents are to take me off the family's USAA insurance. In order for me to get off of their insurance, i have to surrender my license to the DMV. I went to the DMV today and they notified me that once i surrender my license, i have to go through the whole process of getting a license once i want a license again (i.e. learners permit, driving test, etc). what is the process of getting your license in CA if you are an adult. Do i need to own a car or have insurance in order to get my license again? Would i be able to take the written test the day after i surrender my license? do i need to take drivers ed again? do i have to do drivers training again?

Go to http://www.insurance.ca.gov/contact-us/ to find out if you even have to surrender your license. It sound like total bull to me, and with USAA being the scam artists they are - I would never take their word for anything. They may be cheaper - but they are garbage. According to USAA - the reason to surrender your license is that they do not want a licensed driver in the house that is not on the insurance. This is how USAA scams your parents for more money. If you surrender your license and get another one your parents would have to put you back on their insurance - according to USAA. I sued them when I took my daughter off my insurance and refused to have her turn in her license. I was told by the CA State Office of Insurance that they (insurance companies) do not have a legal right to ask you to surrender your license for insurance purposes - only the police department does and for breaking the law. Check with them and make sure that is still true. As an adult you can take the written and then the driver's test - I don't know the time line. You do not have to own a car, but you can borrow a friend's car. You don't need to go through driver's ed or any of that.

If you don't drive you don't need insurance. You will still need ID in the state of California. Even if you don't have a car, there is no reason to surrender your drivers license. For years I didn't own a car and therefore had no need for insurance, but I still had a license. Call USAA and ask why, or else the DMV. This sounds odd. Same deal for an adult as a child - written test and driving test. Read the pamphlet and get a friend to drive you to the DMV for the driving test. Driver's Ed is a great idea, but it's geared towards the new driver.

There is absolutely no reason an insurance company would require you to surrender your license to have you removed from a policy. That is totally false. Keep your CA driver's license! What if you want to rent a car? Or simply drive a friends car. You would still be coverage by insurance in either case. I believe USAA, or your parents, don't have the facts straight. Absolutely NO reason for you to relinquish your license. Don't do it.

Insurance is assuming you would have access to, and drive your parents car. You don't have to turn in your license though, just have your parents list you as an excluded driver on their policy. Or move and don't live at home, either way will work where you won't have to turn in your license.
