Can i still use my passport as ID for my provisional licence if it has expired?

I am going to be sending off for my provisional licence soon, and i will be sending my birth certificate and passport: a birth certificate is not absolute proof of identity, so you must also send one other form of identity, which will be my passport, but my passport has expired and i am wondering if they would accept that as proof of identity? Thanks.
