Do I need a title for my trailer?

I bought a travel trailer with no title. the vin is worn off and i need a title. any answers?

  • i bought a 1989 travel trailer from a kao camp ground employee. an out of state construction crew was living in the trailer and left out of state. the kao employee was given the trialer and the had no title. the vin was covered with paint and when i went ot clean the paint off the vin number was destroyed. i am now attempting to register the trailer in florida but have come to many dead ends with different answers from various governmental agencies. can anyone help me get my cub scout's camper registered?

Since all vehicles are sold by title, and that includes travel trailers, you shouldn't have bought it without a clear and current title. Without one, you don't know if it stolen or has a lien on it. Then you should not have touched the VIN plate. State police might have been able to read it before you destroyed it attempting to clear the paint. Your only option now is bonded title, which is a lengthy and expensive process, but will allow you to get a registration on it, and eventually (unless there is a stolen or a lien) a title. As a general rule, the bond must be 1.5 times the fair market value of the vehicle you are needing a title on.

Go into the DMV and explain what's happened. You'll most likely need a title bond. The premium for the bond ranges between $60 to a few hundred depending on the value of the trailer. The DMV may need to issue a new VIN. But start at the DMV and go from there.

contact the trailer manufacture, there's a serial # some where on the frame, they can help you find it and may give you a vin #
