In most cases, an insurance company has SIXTY days to underwrite your account and decide whether they want to keep you or let you go. It has been my experience that a company will cancel you if you have an accident within that period. If they KEEP you, typically, most insurance carriers will increase your premium by 15% for the accident and as long as the citation wasn't DWI, the ticket shouldn't increase your rate at all. Then, it's a three year curse. The increase will stay with you fro three years (in most cases.) Some companies have an accident forgiveness plan that will decrease the charge after a year or so, but that is NOT common with all carriers. The best thing to do is to call your agent and ask them what will happen. If the company chooses to cancel you, you can call a local independent agent who would have more companies to choose from and they might be able to find you a better rate. Not all companies file the SAME rate for the same exposure. Just look for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you should be able to find a professional agent there to help you.
