Cheap Car Insurance In The UK?

I am 30 and just got my UK licence and want to buy a car. Any tricks to getting cheap insurance?

  • I have had my NZ drivers licence since I was 16 and many years of no-claims. However, I haven't owned a car or insurance policy in the UK. Any tops for not having to pay very high premiums? I would love to get a sports car, but it's looking very expensive. (Would it be worth registering in girlfriends name and being a named driver?)

  • Answer:

Most companies will offer an discount equal to one year 30% anyway. Don't go named as you won't build up your own no claims. Get a low cc engine capacity obviously. Don't get a convertible. take out the maximum voluntary excess when finding quotes. Select your occupation listing carefully. third party only don't have any of the legal protection crap they offer. shop around at comparison websites - many give discount for online. pay by DD in month installments.

Check out the comparisson websites: confused.com moneysupermarket.com compare.com they'll get you the cheapest quotes. You have to watch out for them though. make sure you look into the policies they recommend cause sometimes something will be missing. I'm not sure if having no claims in NZ will qualify as no claims in the UK, the best thing to do is call a coupl eof insurers to ask them - or call your previous insurer in NZ and ask them for your no claims certificate. hope this helps

As you're 30 your premium should be average, you could opt for a high excess meaning you would ending up paying for small damages of your fault. You could put it ion your girlfriends name but will never get NCB unless you go with a company that gives it to a named driver too. You could just get a cheap banger on TFT for year, get your 1yr NCB and move up a class of vehicle. Most importantly shop around

ins companies know all the blags.. so no, theres no cheap tricks... buy a car under 1300cc, and DONT buy a dual fuel one... the tax may be cheaper, but the ins isnt!

If you can stand it then get a modest car until you have built up a no-claims bonus for a few years. If you put the insurance in somebody elses name you will never build up any no-claims for yourself.

The_Ends_Of_Invention

The trick of insuring it in someone else's name and being a named driver is well known to insurance companies and is known as "fronting". It is a form of fraud that they will spot if any claim is made. At least you are "grown-up" and over 25, which will help with the premiums, though you'd do best to forget the sports car until you have a proven track record under your belt. Maybe go for something more boring but in a lower insurance group.

No pay up and look happy. After a year with no accidents your premium will drop sharply. If you register your girl friend and it is found that you are the main driver after you have had an accident you are in deep poo in any event if you do that you will not get credit for no claims discount. Better bite the bullet
