How much is insurance and registration in Alberta?

No insurance, registration expiring?

  • So I need to register my car this month, but I dont have insurance anymore. Things got tough and it was either rent or car insurance, I choose to have a roof over my head instead. I cant afford to pay the $1200 for my insurance right now. I do however, still have the paper insurance card that says im valid till Feb. '07. I have to send a copy of this in as well as smog check to register for this year. Does anyone know if they actually check for valid insurance? ie: call the insurance or check up on it to make sure its still good? Im assuming *hoping* that that would be waaaaay too much work for them to check every single person who's registration needs to be mailed in. But hey, you never know. I do know that as of 2007, the DMV has to notify that I dont have current insurance though so..... HELP! thanks. :) & I know that driving with out insurance is one of the most stupid things I can do, I know this. and im doing all I can to save money to pay for it. Liablity at least.

  • Answer:

Can you afford the tow bill and bail for driving without insurance and no driver's license? Many states require the insurance to report when it isn't paid, and they will revoke your license. Also many states now have a data base of insurance information that they check before issuing new registration. I wouldn't take the chance if it was me.

If you can't afford to pay the whole premium right now, just tell the insurance co. you want to pay monthly. It will only add like $4 to your bill.

THEY DO MOST CERTAINLY CHECK IF YOU HAVE INSURANCE IF YOU DON'T THEY WILL NOT ISSUE THE STICKER AND REGISTRATION THE DMV WILL ALSO ASK YOU TO RETURN THE PLATE IF NO INSURANCE IS IN EFFECT FOR 30 DAYS.

It depends on what state you're in. In Virginia when an automotive insurance policy is cancelled, the insurer has to notify the DMV. Good luck

Honestly, don't do that. Call GEICO. They have great plans for insurance and they start really cheap. The DMV does not check. However, if you were to get into an accident and you provide the police officer with that policy number and insurance company, that insurance company will deny the claim. Lets say they go to sue you and it turns out you don't have any insurance. What will happen is they will continue to do their treatment and then sue their own uninsured motorist policy to recover for pain and suffering. Once their insurance company settles their cases, they will then come after you for ALL the money they have laid out. That means you will get sued for every penny they had to spend due to your negligence. Really, you shouldn't do that. It is fraud also. But you should just be aware that you can get sued and they will come after you. Hopefully you don't get into an accident, but if you do, at least now you know the consequence for driving without insurance. So don't do it. By the way, you don't need full coverage. You can get the minimum liability, at least you will have some type of coverage. Go to GEICO.com and do a free quote. They really are cheap.

No, they usually don't check, but they do in some cases. Sending in false insurance is fraud and you could be prosecuted for it. Even though the paper is valid when you got it, you know it is no longer valid and if you send it in you are guilty of fraud. Getting caught without insurance can get your license revoked for a year and cost you several thousand dollars to get back, so think about it. Either way, the cost of getting caught is huge. Take a bus, ride a bike, get a ride from friend/co-worker. Don't be stupid.

I don't know about where you live, but where I live when they put your information in the computer at the courthouse it will tell them if you have valid insurance or not. If you can't afford to pay the hole premium just pay the down payment and make monthly payments.
