Is there a vehicle transfer in Texas?

How to register and transfer a car title in Texas?

  • I want to buy a Jeep that hasn't been registered since 06', it was on a farm in Mexico and I want to drive it back to Texas, I was wondering, I've never bought a car from a private owner so my question is what are the steps to transfer the title on my name and how do you register the vehicle. Also, if the truck has not been registered for a long time could there be any fines or something like that? I have no idea how this works. By the way I know I need insurance and I already got a pretty good quote.

  • Answer:

Before you even think of buying the Jeep, get the VIN# and have the DMV or police run an NCIC check on it. You don't want to buy a stolen Jeep that was taken to Mexico, then bring it back. You'll lose EVERYTHING - your money and the Jeep. I would suggest you tow it back the the US. Check with customs to see if you are going to be considered an importer. Expect a lot of paperwork and some fees to get it into the US. Also, it will have to meet Federal emissions and safety requirements. If some of that equipment has been removed, you'll be paying a hefty price to get it all back to Federal standards. If it doesn't meet those standards, you aren't driving it into the US. Personally, I wouldn't consider buying that Jeep.
