Do you have to set an appointment to take a driving permit test?

How long do I have to take my driving lessons after I pass the permit test at the California DMV?

  • I passed my permit test on June 20, 2011 and was issued a permit that needed a signature that would be added once I took my first lesson. However, I procrastinated and haven't scheduled my first lesson yet. So, if I schedule one now, I'll probably get my license sometime in August. But since my permit expires June 20, 2012, will I be able to use it? My main confusion is this: do I have until June 20, 2012 to take my first lesson and have my permit signed so that I can complete my driving lessons, or do I have to complete all 6 months of driving lessons before my permit expires? I just don't want to have to retake the written permit test. Thanks in advance for any help, I checked the California DMV site but that wasn't any help :)

  • Answer:

Your permit only lasts for one year, If you don't get your lessons done by then, you will have to take the permit test again. But you can take some lessons now, and others after june 20th with your new permit. Just as long as you get all of them done.
