Is vehicle registration deductible?

Soldiers dealing with vehicle registration renewal?

  • I'm in the military, living in Virginia, home of record in California, and a vehicle registered in New York. I bought my vehicle in New York and that is where I registered it. My registration is due and I need to update my address since I am no longer living in New York. I can't get my vehicle registered to California since the DMV wants to see the vehicle and have it pass California smog standards. I don't want to keep re-registering my vehicle in every state I move to which would require re-titling the vehicle as well. Additionally, I don't have any real-estate in the area to claim as my own. I Any advice?

  • Answer:

re/reg in ny/thats the easiest right now and forget ca until you rotate back/military is under their own set of rules and ny will mail you the reg to your post office in va/write military on the renewal slip and give the box number

You do have a number of problems unique to military folk. I'd ask for advice there on the base.... I'd call the California DMV and explain your situation and ask for advice. There may be an allowance for military folk living outside of the state. There should be someone at the base able to give good legal advice.
