Does the state of Illinois require car insurance?

Can an at-fault driver's insurance co. require me to register a total-loss car in another state before paying?

  • I had recently moved to Nevada and was rear-ended within a week of moving, resulting in a total-loss. The accident happened in California. The at-fault driver held a California insurance policy. This insurance company is informing me that I will need to obtain a salvage title for the car (though I requested that they take possession of the car themselves) and register the vehicle in Nevada before they will pay. I don't want to spend the $300 for the salvage title (I already have a title), plus the money required to re-insure and register the car in Nevada. What recourse do I have, if any?

  • Answer:

That makes absolutely no sense. That would just delay things further. No offense, but are you sure you are understanding everything? Ask them to explain why. If you aren't satisfied, ask for their manager. If no results, contact the California insurance dept.
