Avoiding DMV tax fees?
-
Hey guys, was wondering if any of you can tell me what can be done in this situation. I recently sold my truck on Craigslist and a few days later the buyer told me the truck did not pass a SMOG test, therefore he wants to give me the truck back and I return his money. I had no problem with that. The problem is, he already registered the truck under his name and paid the tax fees of $1000 (what I sold the truck for). Now I have to re-register it under my name and pay tax fees again? is there anyway to avoid the tax fees if all this happened within 1-week? I have the truck now and we signed the papers as if he is re-selling the truck back to me for $1000. Is there anyway to tell the DMV that the buyer was unhappy and returned it so we wont have to pay any re-registering fees? Thanks

Answer:
No. The DMV doesn't care that your car wouldn't pass smog and the buyer returned it.
