What does it mean to have a different license plate number on the title than on the car?
-
My mom gave me a car, on the title it has a different license plate number than what it is on the car. I need to get the title tranferred to me and Im afraid that it will impose a problem. Is that so? And what can I do about it?

Answer:
That the owner got a new plate after the title was created. As long as the VIN number matches what the DMV has for that license plate, you're fine.

The license plate number is supposed to match what's on the REGISTRATION slip. The TITLE is a whole different piece of paper. If your license plate and the REGISTRATION don't match, something's been switched someplace and if you get stopped by the police before you get it straightened out, you'll get a ticket for improper tag.

The plate number on the title is the plate that was originally put on the car. It has no bearing on you selling the car, that's what the VIN is for. The DMV uses the plate number only for cross verification, the VIN is what is important that it be correct on the title, and match exactly to the car.

either the car or the plates are stolen.

The plate does not go with the car. Somewhere along the line the plates got switched. When you title the car, get new plates. Problem solved

I've never seen a license plate number on a title ever. I've been active in the business in 5 states.

The title and the plate should match. Maybe the wrong tag on the vehicle. You have not choice but to transfer it and they will know if there is a problem. You should ask your Mother this question. Maybe someone has switched the plates. One good thing in the state I live in, when a family member gives a vehicle to another, there is no taxes to be paid. Good luck.
