What happens when I get into a car accident in a rental car?
-
1. If I get into a car accident in a rental car, does the rental car company cover my medical expenses and the other driver's medical expenses and the repair expenses? Let's say that I do not have a car insurance because I do not own a car but bought usual types of insurances from the rental car company such as Loss Damage Waiver when I signed the contract. (http://www.avis.com/car-rental/content/render-faq.ac) 1B. If I have a medical insurance, would it cover my medical expenses if I got hurt in a car accident? 2. If I got into a car accident in my own car, is it right that my car insurance would pay my and the other driver's medical expenses and the repair expenses? I would greatly appreciate your reply. Thanks.

Answer:
1 A The rental company does not regularly offer medical reimbursement coverage for accidents where the renters are injured. There is a possibility that in some states like Maryland and Pennsylvania the mandated no-fault insurance might be available to cover medical reimbursements. 1 B Your medical coverage should cover your medical expenses for your injuries. Further, if you paid for the rental by a credit card with special extras when renting a car your credit card company may very well have such coverage as does mine. 2. Your personal auto insurance policy would pay for your injuries under whatever medical reimbursement plan is a part of the policy. The coverage is limited. However if a driver injures a person medical reimbursement should be available from the bodily injury liability coverages.

1. Rental insurance doesn't cover injuries. Your own health insurance would have to be used. You are only covered by the type of coverage you actually buy. 2. Yes, it would be appropriate for them to cover you, if you pay for the right coverage. And it would be appropriate for them to cover the other party if you are at fault.
