Can i renew my drivers license in another state?
-
I'm 20, I've had my drivers license since 2010, it expires June of 2012, I got my license in Oklahoma, but I now live in California because my husband's stationed at Camp Pendleton. Im not going back to Oklahoma until 2013. Can I renew my license by mail or phone call? Or do I have to get a California license? And if I get a California license, will it change anything? Also I don't know if it helps answer the question better, but I've never had a ticket or accident.

Answer:
Yes, you can renew your Oklahoma drivers license on line. You would have to register with the Oklahoma DMV for an e-mail Notification of Renewal which you should get about 45 days BEFORE your license expires. When you get the notice please follow the instruction on the notice. The website to register is: "www.dps.state.ok.us". Good luck. Would you please tell your husband that my family and I said "Thank You" for his service to the country. We appreciate all those in the military do to keep us safe.

When you move to a new state your supposed to get a new drivers license in the state you live in. In your case you need to get a California drivers license.

Even if you are allowed to "have" the license and "live" in California, you are not allowed to use it to drive in California while you "live" there. Under California only a person with a license from the state where the person lives may drive in California. No one living in California may drive there without a California license. The only two exceptions are that actual military personnel (not dependents or spouses) may drive the military's vehicles (but not their personal vehicles) and that foreign diplomats with licenses from the U.S. State Department may drive anywhere they are allowed to go. If you are not going to drive in California, then you can do whatever Oklahoma will let you. If you "live" in Oklahoma and are just in California temporarily, then you can do whatever Oklahoma will let you. But if you get stopped for anything while driving in California, make sure not to say that you live in California. If you "live" in California and you are going to drive there, then you must get a California license.

I understand members of the military can have a temporary license renewal while stationed out of state. I would call the Oklahoma DMV and ask what if you can have a temporary extension until 2013. There is a good chance rhat can be done.
