If you have a claim pending and you renew your insurance do you lose your no claims bonus?
-
i made a claim of a potential claim on a car i reversed into but the driver has not made a claim in the last three months and i think it highly unlikely that he will make a claim as it is possible he had no insurance

Answer:
If you have reported it to your insurance company (and I assume you have as it is a policy condition) then your no claims bonus will be reduced until the insurance company are certain that no claim will be made. As there is a 6-year limit on non-personal-injury claims this can take a while - typically a year. If they decide a claim will not be made then they will allow your no claims bonus from renewal date and give you a refund of the difference between a fault-claim stepped back bonus and a non-fault claim bonus allowed premium. BUT if the person makes a claim in a future then they will disallow your no claims bonus again and ask you for the difference in premium AND/ OR want confirmation that you have told any subsequent insurance company that you have gone with in the meantime that your bonus was stepped back.

You are obliged to tell them regardless, failure to disclose the information is likely to invalidate your insurance. Additionally, there is an offence under the Road Traffic Act of making a false statement for the purposes of obtaining Insurance. Ignore this at your peril !

Hi Just tell the insurance firm you are thinking of joining, that way you cant go worng, some firm may not offer insurance until the claim has been resolved, other will with no problem at all. But make sure you tell them, calls are recorded for your benefit too! good luck

You will not be penalized for an open/ pended claim. If you are renewing with your same carrier they should be aware of any pending claims anyway. Once (if) the claim is paid and closed, your premium will increase on the subsequent renewals.

From the information given you will NOT lose your no claims discount because the other driver has NOT made a claim. The way it works is that they have contigency for accidents close to renewal and will allow your no claims discount to stand, if they other party subsequently claims then it will be adjusted accordingly and you will be asked to pay more money because you have less no claims. The fact that the other driver had no insurance does not stop him making a claim against you if you were responsible for the accident
