What would be a decent used driver that I could buy?

Moving to TX- can I buy a used car in TX and register it there before getting a TX driver's license & address?

  • Hopefully the question explains it all - but if you don't get it, here's the deal. I plan to move from California to Houston soon. I shouldn't get a Texas Driver's License until I have a new residence established out there. But, in order to get a place to live, I would need a vehicle in Houston to drive around and look for one. So, the first thing I need is a car in Houston. However, it would be pretty expensive to drive (or ship) my current car out there - plus it is getting a little old, and this would be a great time to sell it. So the very first thing I want to do is sell my current car in CA and buy a used car in Houston - but when I go to register it, are they going to require a local address and TX driver's license? What are the registration requirements for a used car in Texas? Do you need a Texas Driver's License and Texas address? The Texas DMV website doesn't address this scenario - they tell you what to do if you already live in Texas and just need to renew your registration. They tell you what you need to do if you are bringing your car with you and need to change the registration. But they don't say what to do in this case. Anyone?

  • Answer:

No. You can't register a vehicle in any state until you have established residency there. You will have to prove you live in TX.

As long as you have a current ID, you'll be fine. Doesn't matter what state you're in.
