What should be looking into when buying a motorcycle?

Looking at buying a motorcycle but seller does not have a title, nor is it registered in his name?

  • Im looking at motorcycle and the person selling has no title. They told me that a friend gave them the bike and they never recieved a title nor do they have any contact with this person. It does sound suspicious but if the bike is not stolen how would I obtain a title for it. The bike is a 1983 model year.

    if the guy never received the title for the bike to sell you, that means that he never owned it. so dont buy it from him.

I would agree with the others. Don't buy the bike unless you are really sure that you want this one. I am sure he can apply for a duplicate title. It depends on what state you are in and should check with the DMV.

Even if the friend hadn't heard from the guy that gave him the bike he still could have obtained an abandoned vehicle title in his name. So the excuses he is giving you are incorrect because he could have obtained a title if this is legit. There are other bikes and to protect yourself you need to have a title and make sure that you check the VIN # of the bike against the title to make sure it belongs to that particular bike. My suggestion is to not waste any more of your time with this. Check out the edition of the Cycle Trader and you will find plenty of 1983 bikes.

Don't buy it! Having no ownership equals lost money on your part. Buy something from someone with a title. New York has a procedure (not sure about other states) that allows you to "bond" the vehicle but it takes a lot of money and time before you ever see your ownership.

There are ways to obtain a title however it is true what the other people are saying. if he never received the title and transfered all the paperwork into his name-then it was never his.
