What is a reconstructed title for a car, and what does it mean?

When a car has a "Repaired" title what does that mean?

  • Looking at buying a used car but the deal told me it has a repaired title. They tell me they bought it with light front end damage and replaced the broken parts and repainted it. They told me because of that it is "repaired" I asked about the airbags and they said they did not deploy from the wreck. so what does repaired mean on a title? I know its not the same as salvaged or rebuilt right?

  • Answer:

It is a notice to tell you that the car has more then typical wear and tear, In this case a previous accident. Your concern should on the higher level - especially if the bags did not deploy. If you are seriously considering buying the vehicle you should do two things to safeguard your investment 1) Have it inspected by a third party mechanic that YOU select. Have him look at the damaged area but also inspect the airbags to see if they are even present (those are EXPENSIVE to replace and some lesser dealers may simply 'overlook' replacing the blown ones) 2) Run a check with CarFacts or a similiar auto history resource to see exactly what is on record about the car. THEN decide. .

I'm pretty sure it means the same as a salvaged title. Which means it was in a wreck and declared a total loss by insurance, and somebody decided it was worth rebuilding

Alan

the car was declared a total loss by the insurance company then sold as salvage it was repaired and inspected and received the repaired title . the car if repaired propely is worth 60%-70% of the book value
