How much is it to get a car title transferred to my name?

How do I get car title transferred to my name after 3 years after paying off loan?

  • I paid off my car 3 years ago and got the title in the mail. It was my first car and I thought that since I had the title that I was good and didn't have to do anything else. Now I realize that I was supposed to take it to the DMV (I live in California) and get the finance company taken off as lien holder. What should I do? I am worried that I am going to get fined or something. It was an honest mistake on my part. Anyone know or have a similar experience?

  • Answer:

CA titles have the leinholder listed on the bottom of the title. Your title should have a signature or stamp that the leinholder has released the title to you. You do not have to do anything, at this point, but if you loose your title, you will need to contact the leinholder for a release of lein. This may take at least a week. DMV will show that there is still a leinholder on your title. An insurance company also needs to know that the title is 'free and clear' I suggest that you take the title to DMV and get a new title issued without the leinholder. Too many people loose their titles and need to rebuild them and this can be a pain in the a# with a leinholder still showing.

Go to the DMV now. If you didn't get a lien release letter (or lost it), just contact the loan company and they will send you another one. There's no law saying you have to transfer the lien right way. so you will be OK. Good Luck...

I live in L.A and I have a couple of car tittles from different lien holders. When you received your tittle, that means there should not be a lien holder exist anymore. Your title is your proof of ownership. There is no such thing as fine for having a lien holder in your tittle. As far as I am concern, you don't need to do anything.

If the title still shows the lender as the lienholder, that is fine but you should have a paper from them called a lien release. If you have no lien release, you should ask for one from the lender. You can then get a new title but you don't need to. The lien release is the most important thing you should have along with your title

Lien can be released at anytime prior to reselling car. Should be no penalty, but I would do it soon, in case the company would go out of business.
