If I move, how long to I have to get my new state's drivers license?
-
I am moving from Washington state to NY. How long do I have to get a license... or do I have to at all?
-
Answer:
taken right from the nys dmv website: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/license.htm#driversmoving Drivers From the US or Canada Who Move to NYS NYS recognizes valid driver licenses held by residents of other US states, US territories and Federal districts and Canadian provinces. If you become a resident of NYS, you must apply for a NYS driver license not more than 30 days after you become a NYS resident.

Depends on whether it is a permanent or temporary move. If you maintain your residence in Washington, NY becomes temporary and as a temporary residence, you do not have to do many of the things a permanent resident has to do, except for possibly income tax levied by the state in income earned in the state. For a while, I was temporarily transferred to another office in another state. However, I maintained my house, and my paycheck still was issued by the home office where I lived So, even though I was physically in another state, there was nothing that I had to do. My residence was still there, utility bills and all, and my paycheck was still issued locally to my house, so there was nothing to connect me with the other state except for the fact I was renting a room. I kept my driver's license and my auto registration as it was. It cost me a little more each month to live that way, but I avoided the hassle of changing state residency from here to there and then later, back again. I probably violated some law somewhere in the other state where I was temporarily working because it became a long term thing, but it was never permanent, only a temporary change. This temporary condition went on for over 3 years...

Usually a year. But it varies state to state. So, if I were in your shoes, I would check with the local DMV first thing.

If you are MOVING (i.e., not visiting), you need to exchange your license within XX days after you become a resident of the new state. This XX varies from state to state. It is usually 30 days, but in some states it can be more or less.

It depends on the state to which you're moving. Call the NY Dept of Transportation and get an accurate answer directly from them! Also, don't forget to tell your car insurance company.. .they need to know too! Good luck with your move!!

Normally, the maximum length of time permitted to use the previous States license is 30 days or as soon as you start working, whichever comes first.

About 30 days, call the DMV when you get there..
Try looking on the New York state's DMV website. All states have them, and this is the reliable and up-to-date information.
