Texas Vehicle Registration out of state purchase...?
-
Okay. SO First and Foremost I am a new driver. I have recently taken over payments of a vehicle. As a result I have found out that I need to get this car registered in Texas, it was initally purchased/leased out of state. The registration on the car is expired, it appears the original person that was leasing the car DID NOT pay the sales tax in the original city. SO It looks like I have to pay them here in Texas. QUESTION: In order to register the vehicle do I need the car to be under my name or do I have to contact the original guy that was leasing the vehicle and have him do the car registration? Any help on this would be appreciated!

Answer:
Ok - I miss read your question So, let me try this again - you do have a lein holder as you "took over the payments". Right? So, what you need to do is contact the lein holder to get the title for the car. This title will show there is a lein holder and you are the new lessee. YOu take it down to the title office and process a request for the title you will need to apply for the registration on the car. This usually is done up front when you take over payments on a car that has a lein holder. They basically have to approve you as the new financer. And, then you are the one with they deal with for payments etc.... and they help you transfer over everything, and you must have insurance in your name too on the car. Now, if you got this car from someone to take over payments - and their lein holder is not aware, return the car to the owner and walk away now. The reason is as long as the car is in that guys name as the one who is on the lease, the car has to be registered in his name and as long as it is. He can take the car from you at any time with out consiquense as he is the legal owner regardless who pays on the car. So, you need to contact the company who the lease is through and have them transfer everything over in your name, including the registration. Lastly, if the company who leased the car is not aware of a new buyer and they find out and you didn't contac them, they will have the legal right to confiscate the car for breech of contract on that other guys part. YOu will have to be on the insurance in order to legally drive the car or have your own insurance else where. It is illegal to drive a car with out insurance in your name. So, there is a lot to think about it. Your best bet is to contact the company the car is leased from and work this out with them. --------------------------------------… Now, if you have the title - you will need to take it to the registration office and also bring proof of insurance on the car and your drivers license. THen you register it in the state you are in, in your name, after you pay the taxes
