Building Legal Go Kart?
-
I'm 16, me and my dad have been discussing my first car. We have both thought of a go-kart but from scratch. We plan to buy a go kart chassis and basically put this onto it: Motorbike Engine w/ transmission which will be directly connected via chain to rear axle Go-Kart tyres w/ tread Disk Brakes Dials from a motorbike Car fuel tank or possibly two go kart tanks Four-Point harness seat Lights from a motorbike and mounted on the chassis (they WOULD be easily visible) A roll-over bar, but only if necessary We plan to have the engine to the rear right, tank on rear left. (looking forward, that is). Suicide shifters, they apply the clutch as you push/pull the stick into gear. We do have the equipment, space and knowledge to do this. Don't question that please. All I want to know is, will this pass an SVA as a KIT car? Also, if possible, could anyone link/give me a list of the bare minimum NEEDED to pass an SVA? I can't find it on the web. By Go-Kart, I do NOT mean buggy. I mean a proper go-kart such as: http://www.germes-online.com/direct/dbimage/50301557/Go_Kart.jpg

Answer:
Yes it should be possible, though I'd rethink your placement of things, especially placing a large fuel tank in such a vulnerable place (and don't use a car one)! It would depend on what motorbike engine you use (and personally, I'd stick with a motorbike gearbox, and use a clutch), plus I'd use the majority of the motorbike wiring too for ease, but as mentioned you might struggle to get insurance because a lot of "specialist" insurers (like for kit cars) have a minimum age. You also need to consider the minimum ground clearance you'll need - not easy with a go-kart! If you're not bothered by the elements, then get a bike or a scooter (far easier and cheaper!), or if you want four wheels and / or a project, then get an old (pre-1980) car, suitably low powered, and fix that up!

Not a cat in hells chance of passing safety regulations plus insurance for something like that would be over £10,000 a year. Your on a loser before you start, stick with a proper car.

For a vehicle to pass as a KIT car there are many regulations, building one from scratch will probably result in a lot more time and money than just buying a normal car. At only 16 your insurance will be very high, buying a 1.0 litre car and fitting after market alarm + immobiliser is probably your cheapest option. However making a road legal KIT car from scratch is more hassle for a first car than what is needed.

I don't believe you can build a street legal go-kart. You seem to think your idea is the same as a kit car. It's not. Obtain a copy of your state's motor vehicle laws (In Arizona it it Title 28 of the Arizona Revised Statutes). In it you will find what your state requires for a vehicle to be street legal. It takes a lot more than just hanging a few lights on a go-kart to make it a licensable, insurable vehicle.

By the time you have built it to standards to get it on the road and discovered that you may not get insurance at all or that it will be £10000 plus you could have got the 1.0 litre Corsa that most 17 year olds aspire to. I say aspire because for most the insurance for one of those is out of reach anyway.
