Don't listen to these idiots. Think about the logistics to this question. What if you buy a used car that hasn't been driven in 20 years. Do you owe a fine for the late registration. No. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has no way to know whether or not your car was in operation while the tag was expired. It is not illegal to have a car unlicensed or unregistered so long as the car hasn't been in operation. Feel free to go get you car registered at your leisure, but be aware, while their is no fine for a late registration you do run the risk of being pulled over without proper registration and a ticket of about 75 dollars. yes and no. you can get pulled over and you get a ticket. the ticket price is not worth it.

I think there's a fine everywhere for that. Some places charge interest, some places add a late penalty. Plus you will get a ticket if you're pulled over for an expired tag.
