  There is two main things you must understand about buying a car from a private party: 1. ALL private party vehicles sales are legally considered "as is/where is". Once you drive off with the car any mechanical problem the car has becomes YOUR problem. You can not go back to the seller,and expect them to do anything. So BEFORE you buy the car spend $100 and have a mechanic of your choosing inspect the car to determine it's road worthiness. It will be the best $100 you ever spend. 2. The ONLY document that proves ownership of a motor vehicle is a CLEAR title, and the seller is required to provide you one. A CLEAR title means the car legally belongs to the person selling it. Their name is the one printed on the front. It also means that there are no liens on the car. If the seller can not hand you a CLEAR title to the car ON THE SPOT do NOT buy the car. Many scammers will try to sell a car that they never registered in their own name. That's illegal. Don't fall for any nonsense where the title is concerned. The seller MUST be able to hand you a CLEAR title ON THE SPOT. If any other situation exists do NOT buy the car.
