Can i add a car to my insurance in another state?

Can my dad (lives out of State) add me to his car insurance policy?

  • Hi. I'll be getting my first car soon and I have some questions regarding car insurance. My Dad lives out of state (I live with my mother), and I was wondering if he can add me to his insurance policy. I believe he has State Farm. I understand that it would be cheaper to go under my parent's policy than to create a new policy just for myself. My mother is unwilling to add me to her car insurance policy due to the fact that I am under 21 (insurance rates will increase). If anyone who is in the industry / has experience or knowledge about this and could shed some light, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advanced. BTW: I'm in the US.

If you try this, you will be driving UNINSURED, since what you are proposing is fraud. If you are in an accident, then the insurance company will DENY your claim, so in effect, you never had insurance. ALL auto polices are written in the state where YOU live, and if dad lives in another state, his auto policy will be for that state where he lives, and your auto should be in the state where you live. Auto policies are based on where the car is parked, and if your car is parked at moms house, then the rates are based where mom lives. It is also based on your age, any prior accidents and/or tickets, plus how long you have been driving, (experience). Either mom adds this car to her policy, or you put in your name only. But if the car is in your name, you would need a policy under your own name. Yes, you are high risk and the rates will most likely increase dramatically until age 25. Are you working, and if so, could you arrange to pay your mom from your paycheck the difference in cost to insure you? If not, don't consider buying a car till you can afford to insure it. good luck

No, he has to be living at your address. Your mom can add you to her policy. It will cause her rates to go up, but it will still be cheaper than getting you a separate policy.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

I know of some one that is in the insurance/industry that can provide proper and accurate advise. It happens to be your dad's automobile insurance agent. If you wish to know about that you need to call dad first to see IF he his willing to do this AND to see IF this is possible. As a matter of record, automobile insurance coverage can be provided by parents to children that reside with them or are out in college as registered students since technically such children live at home and the car is registered at the home address. In your case I am going to predict that what you propose is not possible and the only two alternatives are: do not get a car because you must have insurance and your mother, the parent in charge of your life, IS NOT willing to pay for the cost of such insurance. So, your assertion that you shall be getting your fist car "soon" is not possible. Cannot be done. Sorry. That is the law of the land. So, forget about having a car. Second option: for you to be employed so that you can then pay for the insurance costs of your car under your mother's insurance contract. There might be a third option: for you dad to send your mother your share of the the premium of the insurance coverage. That depends on your dad's financial ability and willingness to do so. BUT you cannot purchase and operate a car without insurance coverage. OK? Besides car are hugely expensive beyond the insurance coverages. Hugely expensive. You really do not need a car anyway. You are just going to be sixteen and wish to have one. I understand. So did I but it just was not possible. I just drove my parent's car when it was available and I was given permission. Not until after college and I have a job was I able to purchase a vehicle. Tons of people do this. Teens are involved in over ONE MILLION car crashes each year. ONE MILLION. Risk taking and lack of experience prime causes. Many are victims of course of other driver's mistake. But it does happen. Not worry, your time shall come. Look into the insurance thing if you must but I advise you against getting your own car for now. Just too risky and too expensive. Best wishes.
