Can i use my car insurance to drive my dads car?

  • i got fully comp insurance on my car, does my insurance cover me to drive my dads car?

  • Answer:

if you are over 25 you get any motor car 3rd party as standard as long as the car you want to drive is insured but a quick call to your insurance should conform this

yes but only 3rd party fire and theft

If you had your own insurance it used to be OK to drive someone else's car with their permission and third party fire and theft cover. These days things aren't so clear so I would advise you to check both policies just in case.

Generally yes, 3rd party only, however if you are under 25, most insurers will NOT cover you in another vehicle. Check your policy document to be on the safe side.

check with the insurance company you might be covered for third party fire and theft but best to check.

You are normally covered for third party only, NOT third party fire and theft, a lot of insurance policies also state however that you're only covered 'providing no other policy exists for that vehicle' so, if your dad has insurance for his car you're not covered. You need to read the small print on both policies.

Get you rdad to put you on his insurance because you will be covered only for third party fire and theft

Here we go again. IF and ONLY IF your certificate of motor insurance states that 'the policyholder may drive with the permission thereof a motor vehicle not belonging to the policyholder and not hired to the policyholder under a hire-purchase agreement' then you may drive your father's car. (assuming his policy is just for him or him and your mother). Even if your policy has this benefit you are only covered third party (NOT fire & theft) there is no loss/ damage cover on the car at all.

yeah - u r only covered 3rd party tho when drivin someone else's car

You need to carefully read your policy document. You may be covered third party only to drive a car which does not belong to you. If so be really careful as this just covers for damage to the other vehicle if you have an accident. It will not cover repairs to your dads car. All in all you would be far better off to get your dad to put you on his policy as a named driver. Depending on your age, experience and any driving convictions it may not cost very much to do so.
