How long does it take to get a car title from DMV in tx?

Where can I get a power of attorney to transfer my car title; at the license plate agency or the DMV?

  • The car is being put into my name. I was told to go to DMV to get a power of attorney so that it could easily be signed over to me. Where do I get this power of attorney for a car? (We're trying not to do it the regular way of signing the title over. We're trying to save the $300 that the agency wants to charge to put it in my name)

  • Answer:

You can go go any office supply store. They have pre-made forms. Get a generic "Power of Attorney" and fill it out just for the car, if that is all you need for power of attorney. It is best to take it to a bank or someone who knows how to get it notarized. You will need a witness and have that notarized, the person's signature who is giving the power of attorney and that signature will need to be notarized too. I would be careful of some of the legal forms you get off the internet, some do not meet the legal requirements of your state. With Power of Attorney, you do not pay any fees. You have full power to do what you want with the car and anyone can drive it with the permission of whoever has POA. It is easier to have the bank help you fill it out or someone who is a notary. Since it requires, your signature, the signature of the person giving the power of attorney and a witness, Two of these signatures must be notarized. Your DMV may be willing to help you witness and notarize it but I would call and ask before going down there. I have just found it easier to go to my bank and have it done. In fact, they may have the power of attorney forms. You might want to call them first. But, I am sure they have a generic form at any office supply store because I have gotten them there. Hope it works for you.

A power of attorney will only allow someone else to sign the car over to you, on behalf of the titled owner. You'll still have to pay whatever your state requires to put the title into your name (tax, title, license). Call a Notary Public and ask them how much they charge to prepare a vehicle power of attorney. I am thinking that's not what you need though.

Sounds like you are trying to avoid payng taxes on the "sale". Most States allow a vehicle to be "given" to immediate family members with no taxes charged. If this transfer is not within the family, they may use Bluebook value to determine the taxes.

hmm...that's weird. $300? Wow...what a ripoff! I've never had that roblem...I just put the sale price as like $20 or something and everything is good. I just have to pay the taxes on $20! but...to answer your question...your local bank should have a POA or the DMV works, too!

I'm confused as to what you are attempting to do, but a limited power of attorney doesn't come from either place. You can do it on a regular sheet of paper and sign it before a notary and it's legal. Here you one you can modify to meet your needs. http://www.formsguru.com/forms/legal-forms/sppwrat1.html It's for a boat, but change it to make it car specific. But all it does is allow someone to act on your behalf, it doesn't make any fees vanish.

ok its not going to save any money by having someone sign it for you ... what you do is they sign under seller name you sign under buyers name you go new it done..... power of attorney would be the same but you dont sign it someone else signs your name you still have to pay for the paper work

Don't go to the agency, just go directly to the DMV. You'll have to pay sales tax, title and registration fee but the title will be in your name. A POA will only be good to sell the vehicle but not to drive it. You want the car to be in your name!

300 DOLLARS? Where the hell do you live? Here in Maine it only costs 23!
