How many people die each year from texting while driving?

How many on average a year do people die from getting run over by someone who's texting while driving?

  • Does anyone know?

  • Answer:

This is impossible to figure out as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) tracks the number of pedestrians killed per year, but not what the driver was doing at the time of the accident. From 1995 – 2007, the average number of pedestrians killed per year is 4,987 across the U.S.A. You will not even be able to determine how many folks were “texting” while driving and were killed on our nation’s roadways as the FHWA only tracks “distracted driving” – which means the driver is not watching the road and includes things like texting, eating a burger, applying makeup, etc. According to The Washington Post article at the 2nd link below, “5,870 fatalities last year in crashes involving distracted drivers.” It is impossible to determine how many of those were texting while driving. Good luck and safe travels!
