Are highways good use of land? and why?

  • Answer:

Yes. They're a good use of land because they allow people to travel from one point to another in their automobiles, in the transmission's highest gear, (most of the time,) where they get the best fuel economy. Sometimes they're a bad use of the imminent domain laws, but that's a different subject. The Superconducting Supercollider was not only a lousy use use of imminent domain, but turned out to be a waste of it. At least the tax paying citizens paying for it get something out of a highway. Highways and interstates typically reduce both demand for oil and the emissions of the vehicle. Therefor, highways are, indeed, a good use of land and tax dollars. When you figure in that a substantial portion of anything you purchase at a grocery store, convenience store, department store, Wal-Mart, make your own list, were transported over the highway from either the point of manufacture or the port of entry, highways are basically the backbone of our economic infrastructure.

They are actually very inefficient uses of land, but you need them to drive, so what can you do.
