How can I get better gas mileage for my car?

If your car has a 16 gallon tank would you get better gas mileage if you only filled the gas tank?

  • with 4 gallons? Lets say you lived very close to a gas station so driving to get gas more often was not a factor. So by eliminating 12 gallons in your tank - is that significant enough weight to translate into saving a fair amount of money at the pump?

  • Answer:

It makes no difference if you fill it part or all the way full. I've noticed however, my gas seems to go longer when I fill it up than just put in a quarter tank. But that's just in my mind most likely! Seems when you fill up, that first quarter tank lasts forever! LOL

In principal reducing the weight of the car will improve mileage. However to get a significant improvement you would have to make a significant change in the car's weight. 12 gallons of gasoline weigh approximately 72 pounds. The weight of your spare tire is probably in the vicinity of 30 pounds. If you want to reduce the weight of your car to affect gas savings I suggest you remove the spare and back seat, drive alone (passengers are typically at least 100 lbs) and don't speed. Keep tires properly inflated, car tuned, no fast starts. Or get a more gas efficient car.

Yes! Unless you then go driving around looking for another petrol station. 16-4 =12 gallons, that's a lot of weight you're paying to haul around.
