What type of bicycle would you recommend for commuting?
-
My commute is a little over 7 miles in a medium sized American city. The terrain is fairly level and the weather is usually mild in the winter & hot/humid in the summer. I am primarily concerned with comfort, safety and reliability. I am not mechanically inclined; so something easy to maintain would also be a big plus.

Yes, a mountain bike will do good...but go to your local bike shop and look around...see what you like, get on the bike...how does it feel? Do you want to ride your bike sitting straight up, or your back hunched? 15spd gear is common, but what if you have to change your bike route one day, and the other way is up that hill? Lots of things to consider...also, would you use your bike on the weekends?

Want to buy my bike? You may want to try a mountain bike type of bike. It is big enough for comfortable riding and you can put a rack on the back so you can carry small items like your lunch. The tires are larger and provide more cushion for bumps. The frame/wheels are more sturdy for off road terrain, but that will ensure long life. You can probably pick up a cheap or free used bicycle off Craigs list.

a decent hybrid ... mountain bike style.. sold at walmart... a descent one will run at least 100 bucks... I ride 8 miles and use my road bike.. it is very fast, but does not accommodate much cargo... you also have to think about where your bike is to be stored while you work, some places make you park them outside and when you go out it may not be there, so get a good lock .. and use it on both tires and the frame. Think about the rain too!!! The more expensive the bike the more likely someone will mess with it... good luck... might get a tool pack and a spare tube also.. they have these tire inflates... pressurized canisters.. can us in an emergency and you don't need a pump...
